Days 311,312… Grootfontein/San Bushmen
Travel today is out to Grootfontein and spend the night near a Bushmen homestead (400 km, approx 6 hrs) where we take the opportunity to go out tracking and gathering with the San Bushmen. The next day we also get to spend some time with them and listen to the stories and songs of these fascinating people, presented in their unique “clicking language”. The Bushmen are the oldest ethnic group in Namibia having inhabited Southern Africa for an estimated 20,000 years. Around 30,000 San live in Namibia, but only 2,000 of them still follow a traditional way of life. The San have a deep understanding of nature and ecology, living in harmony with their environment. We see hunting techniques as well as gathering skills told to us by an old bushman with a younger english native translator. Heck, we even find one of the guys in the tribe has been to Germany and Switzerland! After the demo we return to watch the women of the tribe do some traditional dancing and sport… bare breasted, with kiddies in tow. Very cool and very interesting stuff. This living museum was a stunning look at life for the bushmen, as well as a look into our own past here being so close to the Cradle of Humanity.
