Day 298… Johannesburg/Greater Kruger National Park
Ok… early morning on Day 1 (around 3am) i leave my Air BnB to taxi to the the start point of my mind I tour. Then i depart Johannesburg, the ‘City of Gold’ and head off on a safari adventure. A truly unique African experience will unfold as i enter the Greater Kruger National Park ecosystem arriving at my Lodge in time for lunch (570 km, approx 8-9 hours travel time including stops along the way. This would have been nicer if the driver spoke a pi check more english… but mostly if he wasn’t an uninteresting guy with little to talk to me about. .. oh well). I also discover that… for the 1st time ever… and I was hoping for this… I am alone on the micro tour. Nice.
After some time to settle in, i head off on a late afternoon/evening Big Five game drive in an open 4×4 vehicle in a private game reserve. Sundowner drinks are enjoyed at one of the waterholes before continuing my game drive into the night. I get to see a bunch of wild animals (check list at the end) & a bit of excitement when we get a flat and need to all hop out all nd change it i the middle of lion country. Nice. After an exciting evening, return to the lodge to enjoy a traditional South African meal.
Located in the greater Kruger, my accommodation is wonderfully intimate, with just 14 twin-share rooms. Rooms are constructed from local materials and are tastefully decorated and comfortably appointed. The lodge also offers a cosy bar, perfect for chatting with the other guests over a drink or two. There is also a crystal-clear swimming pool for a refreshing post-safari swim. This is also the only time I have done a flash tour as opposed to a basic one!
