Day 285… NUBIAN HOMESTAY
Today we travel by felucca along the nile… peaceful. .. content… much like a collection of small kittens that have found a snuggly box in the sun. We stop for a swim and a simple vegetarian felucca-cooked lunch before we continue our relaxing day and wind up at our Nubian homestay in a tiny village called Al Bleda. As we disembark, fellow traveller Taus and i loiter to stock up on beverages and find we have been cut off from the herd. So we follow tracks and trails and plunge into the darkened depths of the Nubian jungle, encountering all manner of hideous wild beasts and jungle nomads. No… it wasn’t a small grove of trees with an irate cow and and helpful farmer. .. it was totally the deadly depths of the Nubian jungle, encountering all manner of hideous wild beasts and jungle nomads… and I won’t hear another word about it… so there!
Anyway… the family were lovely and we had an amazing experience here with hot enough cooked meals… rousing local evening party games (which were centred around a candle and trying to make someone in the circle smile by saying “my darling, will you give me a smile”, thereby passing the torch as it were to a new victim for the centre of the circle… unless they stay stoic and reply “I’m sorry my love, but i cannot smile for you”) and the like before we all dozen of us bed down in all pleasant giant room together.
