Day 246… Chiang Khong
Feeling better we reboard our boat and cruise leisurely upriver further to Huay Xai before crossing the border into Thailand and our overnight in Chiang Khong (approx. 8-9hrs). On the way we pass one of the oddest temples I’ve seen… it looks to be a cross between a wat, a pyramid, a giant fish, and the Beatles Yellow Submarine! Well… after 10 looong hours, we leave the Mekong and head to Chiang Khong, a quiet town on the Thai side of the Thai-Lao border with beautiful countryside and a relaxed atmosphere. Formerly known as ‘Juon’, peaceful riverside Chiang Khong remains an important market town for the surrounding hill tribes and trade with Laos. And that said we stay yet again overnight in a basic guesthouse. Exciting stuff. We do however see some pretty lights on he river… but that’s our highlight.
Days 247, 248, 249… Chiang Mai
Day 247… Ok… today is an amazing day. First up we take a private minibus to Chiang Mai (approx 5 hrs). But before we hit it, we stop a few hours for lunch in Chiang Rai. Apart from the amusing quick pit stop at an apparently famous cafe/ bungalow called CABBAGES AND CONDOMS. I am not joking. Condom based souvenirs. .. and the guarantee that none of the food will make you pregnant. Not entirely certain why the place is famous… or frankly exists… but there you go. Now to the real reason today is amazing.
