Day 245… Pakbeng – Mekong River
Day 245… Board our private boat for the two-day, water logged and rainy journey down the mighty Mekong River. While our long boat is basic in nature, the journey is relaxed if soggy and we get to see the scenery along the river. Dock at the small trading port of Pak Beng to spend the night (approx 8-9 hrs boat journey). Now this is where the disappointment of yesterday’s water drink comes into play… it has given me the worst ever bout of diarrhoea I’ve ever had…. its horrible and I hate it. 1st thing in morning, 3 toilet trips in 40 mins… then on boat another 3 by 11am… making 6 in all in 4 hours. Much immodium taken… much rehydration salts drunk… much terrible i feel. And here we now go to timed updates…
12.30… and we are up to 8 toilet trips now…
2pm… 9th trip down…
3.40… still hovering at 9 bathroom visits… so far so good.
5pm… and we pull into what passes for a port in Pakbeng in the rain and transfer standing in the rain all of us in the back of a truck to stay overnight in a basic guesthouse. So basic it… and the rest of the street… regularly blacks out. The place is nice enuff and I am STARVING after effectively cleansing my entire insides with 9 bathroom trips, it’s squeaky clean inside there now. So I get a steak with mash which was meh at best… but helped fill a very empty hole. With nothing to do in this literal 1 street town in the dark and rain, it’s early night night!
