Day 243… I am supposed to join our local guide on a walk of the local area, learn more about Lao culture at the temple of Wat Pha Mahathat and explore the local market where the variety of local produce will, I am led to beleive, amaze. However the results of my snack last night have left me with little desire for either food or adventure. I sleep off a fair bit of it, and later awake after a non-existent lunch to join in the afternoons festivities.
Which means we head out to the beautiful Kuang Si Falls, where pale turquoise waters cascade over limestone formations, giving the place an ethereal, fairytale look of half waterfall/half external cave formations. Combined with the fine mist and sunshine, the whole place is the most beautiful waterfall and pool system I’ve ever witnessed, and the lovely pool at the base of the falls is perfect for a refreshing afternoon dip… well it would were i up to that after the food poisoning thing. Now part of this hour long tuk tuk ride out here includes a look at a moon-bear sanctuary that rehabilitates bears from tiny 1 meter cubed cages and farms that drain bile from thier gall bladders for a decade until they die (& get sold off for bear paw souveneirs, meat and skins) for ludicrous chinese herbal medicines. The poor creatures are never really able to go back to the wild, but 25 of them make a home here in this open plan zoolet, including a trooper with only 3 legs. Then its off to find some kind of food i can stomach (a quarter of a garden salad at an Aussie pub) before i return to sleep off more foody poisony stuff. Bleah.
