Day 242… Yet another bus takes us through dusty villages and winding mountain roads to Luang Prabang (approx 7 hrs). This is one of of the most scenic of bus trips to date, and the most winding roads. Indeed we stop at a place where the bathrooms are all missing a 4th wall and open out onto a view across the emerald tree filled valleys making this also the most scenic bathroom I’ve ever been to.
The atmospheric World Heritage-listed city of Luang Prabang is, apparently, a favourite of many. Not entirely certain why as there isn’t really a whole lot to do here. But i digress. Nestled in the hills of northern Laos where the Mekong meets the Khan river, the little place is festooned with ornate temples (known as WATs) and… somewhat oddly… French colonial architecture. After we check in to yet another hotel with the worst wifi this side of a shoebox with the words WIFI written on it in crayon, we head out to see the sun creep slowly towards the horizon before making a break for it and setting in a glorious orange bathed show over one of the main wats here, called Mount Phousi. After that, it’s all late night markets… again. Before this a few of us stay behind at a pub for drinks and… it would later appear… ill conceived ideas on a snack. This will become more evident tomorrow. .. and indeed at 3am tonight when I wake up with several severe stomach cramps. Uh-oh…
